Observation of Preschool Children
(Please note that the Observation course does not count toward the 24 ECE/CD units of core courses, but may count toward the Child Development Teacher Permit.)
Welcome to Observation of Preschool Children.
Course Description
This ten-week course will help acquire the tools and knowledge needed to use observation with the goal of helping young children develop socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Learn how to use observations to guide partnerships with families, to make curriculum decisions, and to assist with environmental design.
As a result of participating in this course, students will:
- Develop objective observation skills
- Use basic quantitative recording techniques
- Identify and manage logistical challenges, biases, and preconceptions
- Design and use a portfolio system to store observations and work samples
- Reflect upon observation records to identify patterns, trends, and conclusions about individuals and groups of children
- Involve families in the observation process
- Use observation findings to drive curriculum and environmental changes that will support children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth
Course requirement include readings, practice, implementation, sharing with peers, and a final report.
